Foundations In-Christ
Vision
Our vision is to provide trusted professional counseling in the communities we serve, known for biblical faithfulness and clinical excellence, where families are strengthened and lives are transformed in Christ.
Our Foundation
At the heart of our counseling center is a commitment to build everything we do on the unchanging truth of God’s Word. We believe that all truth is God’s truth, and that the best clinical care happens where biblical wisdom and sound psychological principles rightly intersect. Imagine a Venn diagram where one circle represents a conservative, faithful understanding of Scripture, and the other represents the field of psychology. We use all of what scripture states to be true and counseling techniques like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (as well as many others) only to the extent that those interventions, insights, and methods align with what the Bible teaches to be true. When psychology and Scripture conflict, we stand firmly on the authority of God’s Word, confident that lasting healing, transformation, and hope are found only in Christ.
Five Distinctives that guide our view of Christian counseling
Gospel-focused
The gospel is the good news that God saves sinners through the death, burial and resurrection of his Son (Romans 3:23, Ephesians 2:4-8). By keeping this in focus, we can stop trying to earn salvation and instead realize it is a gift of God. In this way, we can find true rest for our souls (Hebrews 4:1-11).
Christ-centered
The cross of Christ is literally the crux, or center point, from which all of life comes from and revolves around (John 1:3). We all make something the center of our lives; in other words, we all worship someone or something, whether this be our spouse, kids, job, reputation and so on. We believe that when we worship and put Christ at the center of our lives we glorify him, do good to our neighbor, and are filled with joy.
Spirit-lead
We believe that the Holy Spirit is at work in the lives of those that seek our help. In fact, he is called the Counselor (John 14:26) and is at work to convict us of sin (John 16:8), illuminate our heart so we can understand God’s plan of salvation (Ephesians 1:18), comfort believers in their afflictions (John 14:26), give us hope (Romans 15:14) and grow us into the image of Christ (Philippians 2:12-13).
Compassion
God is full of compassion and calls his people to be compassionate (Psalm 145:8). Like Christ, we aim to be gentle, kind, and sympathetic, especially with those who are suffering (Matthew 12:20, Galatians 6:1-2, Ephesians 4:32, Hebrews 4:15).
Understanding
Throughout the Scriptures, wisdom is marked by one who understands. To really understand another person, one must truly listen. This skill of listening is one of the most important tasks we have committed ourselves to as Christian counselors (Proverbs 18:13, James 1:19, Proverbs 20:5).
